Vertigo Q & A

What Causes Vertigo?

Vertigo, which is a condition that makes the patient feel dizzy and off-balance, may have a number of different causes. Some of the possible causes of vertigo include migraine headaches, problems with the inner ear, and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. In rare cases, vertigo may occur because of abnormalities in the brain. Patients with unexplained vertigo should see a doctor to rule out serious issues.

What Are the Symptoms of Vertigo?

The symptoms of vertigo vary. Patients with this condition may experience sensations of motion or spinning, sweating, abnormal eye movements, nausea, vomiting, weakness, ringing in the ears, difficulty walking, and visual disturbances. While some patients experience symptoms continuously, others experience episodes of vertigo. In many cases, episodes of vertigo begin because of a change in position or a specific movement.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help?

Chiropractic care can address some of the causes and symptoms associated with vertigo. In addition, chiropractic care is less invasive than some of the other treatment options available, which makes it an ideal choice for many patients.

What Treatments Are Available for Patients with Vertigo?

Patients with vertigo may benefit from chiropractic manipulation, particularly in the upper part of the neck. This type of therapy can be used to help with the muscles in the neck, as well as to realign the vertebrae.

Another treatment option for patients with vertigo is the Epley Maneuver. Chiropractors use this maneuver to clear debris from the vestibulocochlear apparatus, which can alleviate the symptoms of vertigo. Dr. Casab evaluates each patient with vertigo carefully to determine which treatment option is best.

How Long Will Treatment Take?

Every patient is unique. Some patients experience a relief from their vertigo symptoms quickly after beginning treatment, while others will require ongoing care. Some patients may continue to experience vertigo even after ongoing treatment, but episodes may become less frequent and/or less severe.
